FDA Disclaimer: These statements and products have not been evaluated by the FDA. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. If you have a health concern or condition, consult a physician. Always consult a medical doctor before modifying your diet, using any new product, drug, supplement, or doing any new exercises.

Despite thousands of years of use, and mounting medical evidence to the contrary, the FDA still has a problem with health claims for food in general and herbs in particular.   Certainly the "snake oil salesman" is still alive and well in both the herbal and alternative medicine worlds.  Even though many medications are based on plants, modern medical science is just beginning to get around to evaluating and understanding the properties and benefits of herbs.  You can't blame them really.  There's big money in medicine, and you can't make that kind of money with herbs.  You can't patent an herb, or make "prescription strength" teas.  You can isolate certain compounds found in herbs and offer them in pill form, or offer ground herbs in capsules.  You can sell these in the drug store or the drug aisle of the grocery store, and charge more money, but you can't prevent someone from just buying or even growing the herbs and making tea.

To make matters worse, modern medicine inherited a somewhat controlling view of healthcare.  Healthcare is seen in terms of doing something to the body to control its behavior or eliminate disease, instead of helping the body to take care if itself.  This view is so firmly set that many well meaning doctors just can't seem to get past it.

Herbs and herbal lore however, are not going away.  Nor are medical professionals willing to look beyond traditional medicine for the good of their patients.  Nor are the countless people willing to "sell out" their credentials, pose as doctors, run biased studies, make up studies, tell you anything you want to hear, and basically do whatever it takes to sell you something that probably won't help you, and may even hurt you.

So, the FDA has a legitimate problem.  So do you and I.  Legally, and ethically, I'm bound by the FDA disclaimer.   All information provided on this website is provided purely for informational purposes only, does not in any way purport to be medical or prescriptive suggestions.   Any reference to medicinal or health benefits is not meant to treat or diagnose any problem and is not meant to replace professional medical advice and should not take the place of any prescribed medication that has been prescribed by a physician.

We suggest you always use caution when taking any herb or medication other than those prescribed or suggested by your physician. If you suffer from illness, disorder, are pregnant or nursing, again, please use caution. All herbs and medications should be kept out of the reach of children.

That said:
Herbal lore and modern medicine are two sides of the same coin.  Herbs can help you feel better.  They can strengthen your immune, respiratory, circulatory and other systems, improve digestion, help regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, zap a cold, improve your mood, and the list goes on and on.  But herbs can't handle everything.  Most herbs are most effective after prolonged use, and can do little to rapidly reverse the effects of years of smoking or poor diet for example.  There are diseases they can't cure, and conditions they can't do enough about.  They may lower your blood pressure over time for instance, but depending on the severity of your condition, maybe not low enough or soon enough (though they may help reduce the amount of medication you need).  Finally, if you don't know what's wrong, it can be very difficult to find the right herb to help.

Your doctor should be your partner in all aspects of healthcare.  S/he can diagnose diseases and conditions, and evaluate the effects of the herbs you take in treating them.  Before prescribing any medications, your doctor should know what herbs you take to prevent unwanted interactions.  It's important to have a doctor you can have a good relationship with.  If your doctor doesn't know anything about herbs and is unwilling to learn, or if s/he won't consider them as part of your healthcare, consider finding another doctor.  You should also consider seeking a new doctor if you are uncomfortable asking questions, if you are not satisfied with the answers you get, if your doctor has little time to spend with you, or if you feel you are not being taken seriously.

Herbs taken for health purposes should be treated with the same care as medicine.  You should know what the herb does, any negative side effects, if you take any medications or have any conditions that preclude taking the herb, and how much you should take.  Remember, anything that can impact your health, can impact your health maybe in unexpected ways.

Herbal remedies are no substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle.  If you are serious about good health, you'll want to combine diet, exercise, herbals, a good relationship with your doctor and a generally healthy lifestyle.  No one of these will do it alone.

This website is designed to be used as part of a complete health plan.  No products are intended to replace your doctor's care, or to supersede any of his/her advice or prescriptions.
